The seventh card of the Major Arcana is the triumphant Chariot. Lucky number 7 signifies completion and perfection and has many religious connotations in Western culture, namely the seven heavens, the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, or the seven deadly sins.

In the Tarot, however, the perceptible connections between the number 7 and the Chariot would be the seven classical planets of antiquity, the lunar phases, the union of the Empress (3 – triangle) with the Emperor (4 – square), and the month of July.

Regarding the imagery of the Chariot in Western religion and mythology, there are a few examples as well. The mythical sun-god Helios would ride a golden chariot with winged horses that carried the sun across the sky every day.

And let’s not forget prophet Ezekiel and his vision of God descending from the sky in a construct with wheels, led by anthropomorphic creatures.

In the Rider Waite card, we see a young warrior-prince inside a peculiar two-wheeled construct that resembles a vehicle. Crescent moons and various occult symbols from the zodiac adorn his magnificent armor. A crown with a golden star and the laurel wreath of victory rest upon his head.

Has the Chariot left the citadel in the background by crossing the river, or is it the bridge itself? While the card clearly expresses movement, with closer inspection, it seems strangely immobile yet radiating with activity.

Unlike the Emperor, we can presume the Chariot did not inherit his authority.

He claimed it by either charisma or force, a dauntless and capable conqueror who established his position of power in his own right. His motto could be “Do what thou wilt” or the Latin classics “Veni, Vidi, Vici” and “The die is cast” by Julius Caesar.

The Chariot is drawn forward by a black and a white sphinx, powerful royal guardians of the mystery of Nature. A winged golden sphere on the vehicle connects this card with the Lovers and the Sun as well, although there’s an abundance of references to the other trump cards.

Apart from the wheels and the stage-like upper part of the vehicle, we can see a solid cube with an axle in the middle, possibly referring to the Chariot’s practical, resourceful, and inventive mind. The strongest feature of the card is that the prince seems to be merged with the vehicle.

Man and machine become one, raising many hypothetical questions.

The Chariot card talks about action in the external world, battles, victory, and direct control without interference. It also signifies moving forward like a river and aligning with the momentum and rotation of the earth.

In this detailed guide, we shall explore the meaning of the Chariot in different readings and try to understand its rich symbolism.

The squares signify stability, order, reason, and action in the physical world. When he knows he’s right, nothing can move him from his place.

The two masks on his shoulders, one smiling and the other frowning, bring to mind drama and theater, and the popular artistic idea that the whole world’s a play, and we’re all actors playing our parts in it.

We have to consider the possibility that the Chariot is stationary. The sphinxes appear to be resting, while a cube conceals the legs of the human figure. Thus, we realize that the Chariot doesn’t need to move.

Life will take him where he needs to be, as he can harness the momentum of the Earth, moving with it naturally and easily.
