Virgo, The Origin Story of “The Maiden”

In modern times, Virgo is represented by a young woman bearing wheat. The Maiden that we know today is a composite of several mythological goddesses. She is linked with Astria, the Greek Goddess of Justice who embodies innocence, purity, and dignity.

Astria is described as a goddess with the material abundance of the world at her disposal since she was the very last of the gods to leave the Earth after it had been corrupted. The brightest star in the Virgo constellation, Spica, represents the promise she will return one day to fix the broken world we live in.

She holds wheat since the Maiden is associated with Demeter, the Goddess of Harvest and Fertility. The wheat that the Maiden holds represents Demeter’s gifts to mankind: Agricultural knowledge and fertile land.

Each sign has a crucial contribution to the world, and Virgos make the world better by helping others, which is why they are represented by Demeter and Astria. Like Astria, Virgo has pure intentions and wants the world to be a dignified place and is unwilling to just watch the world crumble around them.

Like Demeter, they seek to make the world better by spreading crucial knowledge that helps the world progress.

Virgo Characteristics: The Pros and Cons

Stepping aside from the mythological origins of Virgo, here are the basic traits of these folk.

Virgo is an Earth sign, meaning that they are stable, wise, and efficient people. You will never see one come home sobbing over a passive remark a coworker made or deciding to spend their entire paycheck at the mall.

They are likely the most cautious sign in the entire zodiac. Virgo’s tend to think long-term, and their decision making reflects that. They are the type of person to always carry some hand sanitizer in their pockets and know the precise amount of money they have budgeted towards spending on a given day.

This inherent cautiousness in life makes them a solid, reliable partner and trusted coworker. No matter what Virgo does, whether it’s for a group project or performing some complex calculations for the office, they are sure to have everyone’s trust.

An additional positive trait of Virgo is their intelligence: They have very analytical and mature minds that help them navigate the toughest dilemmas.

There is even empirical evidence to support this. The National Bureau of Economic Research published an article revealing that those born in September outperform their peers in school and have lower rates of crime!

As stated earlier, Virgo’s altruistic traits mean they will frequently do acts of kindness for others, mainly in the form of giving advice. It is not an exaggeration to say that Virgo is the world’s emotional support animal. Everyone inevitably goes to a Virgo when they are in a pickle and need some straightforward, no-nonsense advice.

But they aren’t without flaws. They are ferocious critics and indecisive. Virgos are the kind of people to go into a restaurant and critique everything on the menu. The entrees will be just too bland whereas the recommended meals are just too cliche.

While everyone else at the table will have sat down and decided on what to order almost instantly, the Virgo will have to take a solid ten minutes to decide what to order.

It gets far worse with matters more serious than just ordering some food. Virgos will agonize over the smallest details and will develop a nasty habit of nagging, which can dampen their relationships with friends and family.

The heart of the problem lies with Virgo’s expectations: They have very high standards for both themselves and others.

At best, these high standards can translate into good results and high productivity but at worst this creates someone who is perpetually dissatisfied. Being around a toxic Virgo is the most insufferable, awful punishment imaginable since they always complain, but don’t even know what they want in life!

So if you are a Virgo, or plan on dating one, keep a keen eye on their perfectionism and communicate with them about it. If you both see eye-to-eye about expectations, you’ll both get along much better!

The biggest lesson these Maidens have to learn is that something doesn’t have to be perfect: You can live a much happier life if you don’t get caught up in the little things.

Virgo’s Modality

Don’t let that complex word scare you off! Modality just refers to three different qualities: Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Dividing the signs into several different modalities is similar to how the signs are divided by the element, but modality puts more emphasis on how those signs interact.

Virgo’s modality is mutable, meaning that they are flexible, open to change, and diplomatic with others. Mutable signs are often seen as mature since they can “blend in” with their surroundings and tolerate differing opinions.

That’s why being around mutable signs, such as Virgo, can be a breath of fresh air. Being around someone willing to talk things out with you logically and calmly can make a world of difference.

Another big plus is that this makes Virgo unafraid of change: They can approach a situation objectively and decide whether it is best to stay the course or abandon ship without having an overzealous mindset. This mindset helps Virgos to mature and evolve.

Lastly, you must not forget that they are resourceful! Mutable signs like Virgo know how to get the absolute most value out of what is given to them, and always finds a way to make something work out in the end.

However, being a mutable sign can also have negative consequences for the Maiden. They are prone to be pressured into things, and because of their altruistic nature can find it difficult to just say no.

Therefore they will often give into absurd demands or cave in to pressure from more forceful personalities. So, if you are a Virgo, beware! Others can and will take advantage of your kindness.

An additional weakness of the mutable modality is that they aren’t bold enough to begin something. Going off of the modalities, cardinal signs have the drive to start something, such as a business or a project.

Fixed signs desire to see it done, while Mutable signs finish it. They make sure that every nook and cranny is working well, and they essentially do the final finishing touches that may have gone overlooked.

But unfortunately for Virgos, this means that they often choose inaction rather than doing something when they’re stuck in a rut. It’s an ironic contradiction: The one who everyone goes to for advice is incapable of helping themselves!

Virgo Compatibility

As an Earth sign, Virgo gets along well with other Earth and Water signs. So, Virgo is compatible with:

  • Capricorn: January 16 to February 16
  • Taurus: April 19 to May 20
  • Cancer: June 21 to July 22
  • Scorpio: October 23 to November 22
  • Pisces: February 19 to March 20

Virgo can relate much more to these signs than air and fire signs. Fellow Earth signs such as Capricorn and Taurus understand the need to build stable lives as a team, and both have a mutual need for mental stimulation.

Earth signs form close, but not over-the-top and obsessive bonds with each other that have good staying power.

It may sound dull, but Earth signs working together can create amazing results. They create what’s called “power couples”, two successful people garnering money, success, and stability. The sky’s the limit when two of these industrious people fall in love.

Virgo gets along great with water signs since they perfectly balance each other. Water is emotional and intuitive, while Virgo is rational and calm. The water signs help Virgo to see things with their heart and show them that it’s ok to be open about your feelings.

Virgo, in turn, helps water signs to calm their more intense emotional swings.

In many ways, Virgo is the opposite of the water signs, yet they still attract one another. Virgo’s need for intellectual stimulation is fulfilled by the water sign’s creativity and otherworldliness. They will talk about wild fantasies, spirituality, and the arts, the topics that are usually avoided by the rest of the signs.

But the number one reason that Virgo likes these signs is that they are much more mellow and loyal than the Fire / Air signs. Virgos tend to avoid those signs since they are impulsive, wild, blunt, and often noncommittal.

Signs such as Gemini have too much unpredictability, and Virgo considers the fire signs as immature: Their tempers don’t mesh very well with Virgo’s total calmness.

Concluding Words

Although Virgo will overthink, worry, and nitpick everything, they are still one of the kindest in the entire zodiac. As altruists, they overthink, worry, and nitpick out of concern. They want you to be the happiest and healthiest that you can be.

If you are a Virgo, never lose sight of that noble goal of helping others and working hard. Though you may go underappreciated, just know that you make the world go around.

While it is fun to have a discussion about philosophy from Sagittarius or converse about conspiracies with Gemini, nothing can replace the unbiased logic that Virgo stabilizes the world with.

My Favorite Items…

I love my Asakuki Diffuser, I have this going in my living room or my office with either peppermint or lavender. The diffuser holds more water than other diffusers and lasts longer. It also has a timer so that I doesn’t run dry. The Diffuser adds a nice gentle scent to my home.

I also love having my White Sound Machine and my Asakuki Diffuser running in my living room. Sometimes I will choose the sound of rain or the ocean or even thunder. It depends on my mood.

I’ll fill the diffuser with lavender or peppermint. With the thunder in the background and the smell of peppermint, it’s like being whisked away to a faraway place!

I really love the Himalayan salt Lamp and my Crystal Tree of Life. I have them in my office and they create a “zen” feel for me while I’m working.
