What are Zodiac Archetypes?

Have you heard about zodiac archetypes and wonder what they are and how this fits into astrology?  Astrology, psychology and astronomy were all very intertwined at their origins.  In this article, I want to delve into zodiac archetypes.

An image or a story pattern that keeps on coming back in different cultures and religions. Repeating themes in the form of images. Representing symbols of things that we can’t tangibly find in daily life.

The English word zodiac derives from zōdiacus, the Latinized form of the Ancient Greek zōidiakòs kýklos (ζῳδιακός κύκλος), meaning “cycle or circle of little animals”. Zōidion (ζῴδιον) is the diminutive of zōion (ζῷον, “animal”) and reflects the permanence of animals among the twelve signs. ref: Wikipedia.org

Zodiac Archetypes are ancient roles hidden in our collective unconscious that are used in everyday life that we can relate to through the lens of astrology. There are 12 main Zodiac archetypes also called the constellations. From Aries to Pisces. This is what we know as the mainstream Sun signs.

What Exactly is the Zodiac?

The zodiac is created by the apparent motion of the sun around the earth. It is the segment of the sky where the sun, moon, and the planets move.

It is divided symbolically into the four seasons as we know them in the Western Hemisphere. Which is where the system originated from. Although it is based on the 4 seasons this is only symbolically the case so the system can be used anywhere in the world.

This division in the Zodiac is based upon the equinoxes and solstices. Expressed in divisions of 30 degrees. From 0-29 degrees.

What is an Archetype?

Carl Jung, one of the founders of modern psychology, and researcher of the collective archetypes wrote extensively about archetypes. He also believed in astrology and calls these Zodiac Archetypes the integration of our shadow selves. That is what we project onto others.

Astrology is a useful representation of what Jung meant by accepting and integrating the unconscious parts of ourselves. Especially related to houses 7,8 and 12 in your astrology chart which are in our unconscious.

One of Carl Jung’s famous quotes:

‘Unless you make the unconscious conscious you will call it fate’

Carl Jung

Why is this Carl Jung’s Quote of Making the Unconscious Conscious Relevant?

Archetypes are symbolic representations in our collective unconscious present in us all. But before we look at the astrological Western zodiac signs let us look at where these archetypes come from and how they are relevant to us. How can we see them in our daily lives?

One of the purposes of the use of this astrological system is to gain more clarity on your own personality. Which stories are conscious, and which are more unconscious?

To help you decondition from your past and to integrate all 12 signs to become a more conscious human being. To live a more authentic version of yourself. To embrace the evolution of consciousness.

Carl Jung, the famous psychologist about Archetypes and group consciousness can be taken as an example. Read this quote from one of his books. The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious.

“A group experience takes place on a lower level of consciousness than the experience of an individual. This is because, when many people gather together to share one common emotion, the total psyche emerging from the group is below the level of the individual psyche.

If it is a very large group, the collective psyche will be more like the psyche of an animal, which is the reason why the ethical attitude of large organizations is always doubtful. The psychology of a large crowd inevitably sinks to the level of mob psychology.

If therefore, I have a so-called collective experience as a member of a group, it takes place on a lower level of consciousness than if I had the experience by myself alone.”

C.G. Jung, The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious

I love my Asakuki Diffuser, I have this going in my living room or my office with either peppermint or lavender. The diffuser holds more water than other diffusers and lasts longer. It also has a timer so that it doesn’t run dry. The Diffuser adds a nice gentle scent to my home.

I also love having my White Sound Machine and my Asakuki Diffuser running in my living room. Sometimes I will choose the sound of rain or the ocean or even thunder. It depends on my mood.

I’ll fill the diffuser with lavender or peppermint. With the thunder in the background and the smell of peppermint, it’s like being whisked away to a faraway place!

I really love the Himalayan salt Lamp and my Crystal Tree of Life. I have them in my office and they create a “zen” feel for me while I’m working.
